Calathea orbifolia, commonly known as the Orbifolia Prayer Plant, is a striking tropical plant native to the rainforests of South America. This species belongs to the Marantaceae family and is renowned for its large, round, lush green leaves, which are elegantly marked with silver stripes that give it a unique, eye-catching appearance. The leaves of this plant have a beautiful, glossy texture that adds vibrancy and luxury to any indoor space. It is known for its fascinating “prayer” behaviour—its leaves close up at night, mimicking a prayer position, and open again with the morning light. Calathea orbifolia thrives in humid environments and makes an excellent addition to any indoor garden or tropical plant collection.

Plant Care Guide

Light: Calathea orbifolia thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate low light conditions, its growth may slow, and its striking leaf patterns may become less pronounced. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can scorch the leaves, causing them to yellow or develop brown spots. For optimal growth, ensure that the plant receives bright, indirect light for at least 4–6 hours a day.

Water: This plant prefers consistently moist soil but dislikes being waterlogged. It is essential to keep the soil slightly damp, but not soggy, and to allow the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry out between waterings. Calathea orbifolia is sensitive to both under-watering and over-watering, so it’s important to find a balance.

Soil: Calathea orbifolia prefers well-draining, lightweight soil that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. A rich, loamy mix with added perlite or coarse sand can help improve drainage while maintaining the necessary moisture levels.

Fertilising: To encourage healthy growth, feed your Calathea orbifolia with a balanced fertiliser. Over-fertilising can lead to burnt roots or leaves, so always follow the recommended dilution on the fertiliser packaging.

Common Pests: While Calathea orbifolia is generally not prone to pests, it may occasionally attract mealybugs, aphids, or spider mites. Regularly inspect the undersides of the leaves for any signs of pests. If you spot any, treat the plant with insecticidal soap or wipe the leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove the pests. Additionally, ensure good air circulation to help prevent fungal infections like powdery mildew.

General Care: Calathea orbifolia thrives in high humidity, so it’s essential to maintain a humid environment for the plant. You can increase humidity by misting the leaves regularly, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or using a humidifier nearby. To prevent leaf browning at the tips, ensure the plant is not exposed to dry air or draughts from air conditioning or heating vents. Regularly wipe the leaves to remove dust and maintain their shine. It’s also a good idea to rotate the plant occasionally to ensure even growth and prevent the plant from leaning towards the light source.
