Chlorophytum comosum, commonly known as the Spider Plant, is a popular and resilient houseplant native to southern Africa. Recognised for its arching, strap-like green leaves with white or yellow variegation, the Spider Plant is an attractive and easy-to-care-for addition to any home or office space. The plant produces small, star-shaped white flowers followed by plantlets (or ‘spiders’) that dangle from long stems, giving the plant its distinctive look. Spider Plants are known for their air-purifying qualities, making them not only beautiful but also beneficial to indoor environments.

Plant Care Guide

Light: Spider Plants thrive in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate lower light conditions. However, their growth may slow down, and the variegation in the leaves may diminish in shadier spots. Avoid placing the plant in direct sunlight, as this can scorch the delicate leaves and cause brown tips.

Water: Water the plant when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry to the touch. Spider Plants prefer to be kept moderately moist but can tolerate some drying out between waterings. Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. Be careful not to overwater, as this is one of the most common issues with Spider Plant care.

Soil: A well-draining, lightweight potting mix is ideal for Spider Plants. A standard indoor potting mix with added perlite or sand will help ensure proper drainage and prevent the soil from becoming too compacted. This allows the plant’s roots to breathe while retaining enough moisture for healthy growth.

Fertilising: Feed the Spider Plant with a balanced fertiliser to encourage robust growth. Organic compost or slow-release fertilisers can also be beneficial. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can cause excessive leaf growth at the expense of the plant’s natural shape.

Pests: Spider Plants are generally resistant to pests but may occasionally attract mealybugs, aphids, or spider mites. Regularly inspect the undersides of the leaves for any signs of pests. If pests are detected, treat the plant with insecticidal soap or neem oil to eliminate the infestation.

General Care: Spider Plants are low-maintenance and adapt well to a variety of indoor conditions. Regularly remove any dead or yellowing leaves to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage new growth. These plants also benefit from occasional trimming of their ‘spiders’ (plantlets) to prevent overcrowding and keep them looking neat. Spider Plants are quite tolerant of fluctuations in humidity but will appreciate occasional misting, especially in dry environments, to help keep their leaves looking fresh and healthy.
