Coleus amboinicus, commonly known as Indian Borage, is a robust, aromatic herb native to tropical Asia. It is prized for its thick, fleshy, and fragrant leaves, which resemble those of a typical mint plant but with a more rounded, succulent texture. The leaves have a distinct, savoury scent, making them a popular addition to culinary dishes, especially in Indian and Southeast Asian cuisine, where they are used in curries, soups, and as a flavouring agent. Indian Borage is also valued for its medicinal properties, being used in traditional herbal remedies for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory benefits. This fast-growing perennial can thrive both in the garden and in pots, making it a versatile plant for both ornamental and practical use.

Light Requirements: Indian Borage thrives in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the cooler parts of the day. For optimal growth, it is best placed in a location that receives at least 4 to 6 hours of light daily.

Watering: Indian Borage prefers consistently moist soil, but it is important to avoid waterlogging. Water the plant when the top 2-3 centimetres of soil feel dry to the touch, ensuring the water penetrates deep into the root zone.

Soil Conditions: Indian Borage prefers well-draining, fertile soil that retains moisture but allows excess water to flow through easily. A mix of loamy soil enriched with organic matter, such as compost, will provide the nutrients needed for healthy growth. When growing in pots, make sure to use a container with good drainage to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom. The plant is relatively tolerant of various soil types, provided they are not overly compacted or waterlogged.

Fertilising: To support vigorous growth and healthy foliage, Indian Borage benefits from regular feeding. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser. Over-fertilising can cause excessive leaf growth at the expense of flavour, so it’s best to under-feed rather than over-feed. Organic options, such as compost or well-rotted manure, are also suitable for enriching the soil and promoting steady growth.

Pests: Indian Borage is relatively pest-resistant, but common pests such as aphids, mealybugs, and whiteflies may occasionally infest the plant. Regularly check the undersides of the leaves for signs of pests. If infestations occur, treat the plant with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Good air circulation around the plant helps prevent pest problems and fungal infections, so ensure the plant is not overcrowded.

General Care: Coleus amboinicus is a hardy, low-maintenance herb that thrives with minimal attention. Ensure the plant receives enough sunlight, water consistently without over-wetting the soil, and provide a nutrient-rich, well-draining medium. Prune the plant regularly to encourage bushier growth and prevent it from becoming too leggy. With its refreshing scent and culinary value, Indian Borage is an easy-to-care-for addition to any garden or indoor space.
