Dieffenbachia seguine, commonly known as Dumb Cane, is native to the rainforests of Central and South America. The cultivar Dieffenbachia ‘Mariana’ is prized for its large, glossy leaves with striking patterns of white and green. This low-maintenance, air-purifying plant is perfect for both indoor and outdoor spaces, adding a touch of elegance with its vibrant foliage.

Plant Care Guide

Light: Dieffenbachia ‘Mariana’ thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate low light but will produce better foliage in brighter conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.

Water: Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. The plant prefers consistently moist soil but dislikes being waterlogged, so ensure good drainage. Empty the saucer after watering to prevent standing water.

Soil: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix. A tropical or indoor plant mix is ideal as it retains moisture while allowing good drainage.

Fertilising: Feed with a balanced fertiliser. Avoid over-fertilising, as it can lead to weak growth. Organic compost can also be used.

Common Pests: Watch for pests like aphids, spider mites, mealybugs, and scale. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regularly inspect the plant to catch pests early.

General Care: Wipe the leaves regularly to remove dust and maintain shine. Dieffenbachia enjoys moderate humidity, so occasional misting helps. Prune damaged leaves to keep the plant tidy and encourage new growth. Handle with care, as the sap is irritating and toxic if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
