Ficus elastica ‘Shivereana’, commonly known as the Variegated Rubber Plant, is a striking cultivar of the popular Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica) native to Southeast Asia and parts of India. This variety is prized for its stunning variegated leaves, which feature a mix of dark green with creamy white or light silver edges, creating a striking contrast that adds elegance to any space. The Ficus elastica is a member of the Moraceae family and is well-known for its bold, glossy foliage and its ability to purify the air. As a low-maintenance yet visually captivating plant, the ‘Shivereana’ cultivar is a favourite among both novice and experienced gardeners looking to add an ornamental, easy-care plant to their homes or gardens.

Plant Care Guide

Light: Ficus elastica ‘Shivereana’ thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate moderate light conditions, it flourishes with at least 4–6 hours of indirect sunlight each day. Direct sunlight can scorch the delicate variegated leaves, so it’s best to place the plant in a location with filtered light or dappled shade.

Water: Water the plant regularly, allowing the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry out between waterings. Ficus elastica prefers consistently moist, but not waterlogged, soil. Ensure good drainage in the pot to prevent root rot. During periods of high humidity or rainy weather, be cautious not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot.

Soil: This plant prefers a well-draining, light, and slightly loamy potting mix. A general indoor potting mix, combined with perlite or sand for better drainage, works well. Good drainage is crucial to prevent water from sitting at the roots and causing rot.

Fertilising: Feed Ficus elastica ‘Shivereana’ with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage. A slow-release fertiliser can also be used for steady nutrient supply. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to weak growth and a reduction in leaf variegation.

Pests: Ficus elastica ‘Shivereana’ is generally pest-resistant but may occasionally be affected by common indoor pests such as spider mites, scale insects, or mealybugs. Regularly inspect the plant, especially the undersides of the leaves, for any signs of pests. If necessary, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil to eliminate infestations.

General Care: Ficus elastica ‘Shivereana’ is relatively easy to care for, but it does benefit from occasional cleaning of its large, glossy leaves to remove dust and allow better light absorption. Prune any dead or damaged leaves to keep the plant looking neat. While it is relatively low-maintenance, Ficus elastica appreciates consistent care and a stable environment. Avoid sudden temperature fluctuations or draughts, as these can stress the plant.
