Olea europaea, commonly known as the Olive Tree, is a small, evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean region. Known for its leathery, silver-grey leaves and gnarled, attractive trunk, the Olive tree is an iconic symbol of peace, resilience, and longevity. Its small, fragrant white flowers bloom in clusters, eventually giving way to the green, olive fruits that ripen to a rich, dark purple or black. While traditionally grown for its edible fruit and oil, the Olive Plant has become a popular ornamental plant due to its unique appearance and low-maintenance care. Though typically associated with Mediterranean climates, the Olive tree can thrive in tropical and subtropical environments with the right conditions.

Plant Care Guide

Light: The Olive tree requires full sun for at least 6–8 hours a day to thrive and produce healthy growth. In tropical climates, ensure the tree gets ample sunlight to encourage strong, compact growth and to maintain its silvery foliage. While it can tolerate some partial shade, it will grow more slowly and may lack the dense foliage and strong structure it’s known for.

Water: Olive trees prefer well-draining soil and should not be overwatered. Allow the top 5–7 cm of soil to dry out between waterings. Water deeply but infrequently, ensuring the soil is moist but not waterlogged. The Olive tree is drought-tolerant once established, but regular, moderate watering during dry spells will support optimal growth.

Soil: Olive trees thrive in light, well-draining soil, ideally sandy or loamy, that doesn’t retain excess moisture. The soil should be able to dry out quickly after watering to prevent root rot. If growing in containers, use a well-draining potting mix designed for Mediterranean plants or cacti and succulents.

Fertilising: Feed your Olive tree with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to promote healthy growth. Organic compost can also be used to enrich the soil. Be careful not to over-fertilise, as this can lead to excessive leafy growth at the expense of the plant’s overall health and shape.

Pests: Olive trees are generally resistant to pests, though they may occasionally be affected by aphids, scale insects, or the olive fly. Regularly inspect the leaves and branches for any signs of infestation. If pests are detected, treat the tree with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Also, be mindful of fungal diseases in humid conditions—ensure proper airflow and avoid waterlogging to reduce the risk.

General Care: Olive trees are hardy and relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal pruning to maintain a neat shape. They are perfect for creating a Mediterranean-style garden or adding a touch of elegance to patios and balconies. As a drought-tolerant plant, Olive trees thrive in dry, sunny locations, but they still appreciate regular care to keep their growth strong and their foliage vibrant.
