Succulents are a diverse group of plants known for their thick, fleshy leaves and stems that store water. Commonly referred to as Stonecrops, Desert Roses, or simply Succulents, these plants originate from arid regions around the world, including Africa, Central America, and parts of Asia. Their ability to retain water allows them to thrive in dry environments. Succulents come in various shapes, sizes, and colours, with some displaying vibrant flowers during blooming periods. They are highly adaptable and require minimal care, making them a popular choice for both indoor and outdoor gardening.

Plant Care Guide

Light: Succulents prefer bright, direct sunlight for at least 4 to 6 hours a day. If grown indoors, place them near a sunny window where they can receive plenty of natural light.

Temperature: Succulents thrive in temperatures between 18°C and 27°C. They can tolerate higher temperatures, but avoid exposing them to extreme heat or cold.

Humidity: Low humidity levels are ideal for succulents. While they can adapt to more humid environments, ensure good airflow around the plant to prevent excessive moisture, which can lead to fungal issues.

Watering: Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot, so it’s important to ensure that the pot has proper drainage. As a general rule, water only when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry to the touch.

Fertilising: Succulents are low feeders but can benefit from a balanced, diluted fertiliser every 4-6 weeks. A cactus or succulent-specific fertiliser is ideal to promote healthy growth.

Soil: Use a well-draining, sandy potting mix specifically designed for succulents and cacti. The soil should allow water to flow freely to prevent soggy roots.

Pruning: Trim off any dead or shrivelled leaves to maintain the plant’s appearance and encourage new growth.

Soft rot: Soft rot is a bacterial disease that affects a wide range of plants including vegetables, fruits, and ornamentals. Symptoms include water-soaked lesions, tissue softening, and foul odors, eventually leading to plant collapse and death. The disease can be managed by maintaining good sanitation practices, avoiding plant injuries, and using resistant plant varieties..
