Tradescantia zebrina, commonly known as the Silver Inch Plant, is a stunning, fast-growing perennial native to Mexico and Central America. Known for its striking foliage, this plant features elongated, lance-shaped leaves that display a vibrant mix of silver, green, and purple hues, making it an eye-catching addition to any space. The Silver Inch Plant is often grown as a trailing or cascading houseplant, and its colourful leaves brighten up both indoor and outdoor settings. It is also commonly referred to as Wandering Jew, although the latter name can be a misnomer as it doesn’t relate to a single species.

Plant Care Guide

Light: Tradescantia zebrina thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, the colours of its leaves are most vibrant when it receives ample light. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight, as this can scorch the leaves. If grown in a hanging basket or as a trailing plant, ensure it gets light from all sides to encourage balanced growth.

Water: Water the plant regularly to keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid over-watering. Allow the top 2-3 cm of soil to dry out between waterings. Tradescantia zebrina is relatively drought-tolerant, but consistent moisture is ideal for healthy growth. Ensure the plant is in a pot with proper drainage to prevent water from sitting at the bottom, as this can lead to root rot.

Soil: This plant prefers well-draining, lightweight soil. A standard houseplant mix works well, but you can enhance drainage by adding perlite or sand. The soil should retain some moisture but dry out slightly between waterings. When planted in containers, ensure there are drainage holes to avoid waterlogging.

Fertilising: Feed the Silver Inch Plant with a balanced fertiliser during its growing period to promote healthy foliage and strong growth. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can cause leggy growth and poor leaf colour.

Common Pests: Tradescantia zebrina is relatively resistant to pests but may occasionally attract mealybugs, aphids, or spider mites. Regularly check the undersides of leaves for any signs of pests, such as webbing or small, discoloured spots. If pests are found, treat the plant with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Over-watering can also lead to fungal issues, so be mindful of moisture levels and air circulation.

General Care: This low-maintenance plant benefits from regular pruning to keep it looking neat and to encourage fuller growth. Pinching back leggy stems promotes bushier growth and helps maintain its cascading appearance. Tradescantia zebrina is also known for its ability to propagate easily from stem cuttings, so if the plant becomes too large or unruly, you can easily propagate the excess.
